What is medial malleol?

The medial malleolus is a prominent bony protrusion on the inside of the ankle joint, formed by the lower end of the tibia bone. It plays an important role in the stability of the ankle joint, along with other structures such as ligaments and muscles. Injuries to the medial malleolus, such as fractures or sprains, can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. These injuries may be caused by trauma, repetitive stress, or underlying medical conditions. Treatment may include rest, ice, compression, elevation, and physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Maintaining strong ankle muscles and wearing appropriate footwear can help prevent injuries to the medial malleolus.
